Dr. Shwetha M. Anand embraced a career in medicine to make a difference in people’s lives, something she does daily at Epic Care’s Dublin and San Leandro, California locations.

Early Life

An endocrinologist, Dr. Shwetha M. Anand, developed an interest in studying the human body as a kid. An experience during her college career further pushed her into the medical field. Her father’s health began to deteriorate, and she saw firsthand how those troubles affected him and her family, partly because he was their primary source of income.

“That’s when truly I appreciated all the help we could get from the physicians and what difference they made in our lives. That was the basically turning point in my life to help me decide to join medicine,” she said.

Dr. Shwetha M. Anand graduated from Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences in India and then headed to the United States. She completed a residency at Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, Michigan, and a fellowship at Southern Illinois University in Springfield. She also belongs to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists’ Endocrine Society.

Her Passion

As a board-certified endocrinologist at Epic Care, which she joined in 2014, Dr. Shwetha M. Anand treats a wide range of endocrine and metabolic disorders. According to the National Institutes of Health, the endocrine system involves eight glands located across the body that affect numerous aspects of a person’s life and health, including growth and development, mood, sexual functions and metabolism. These include the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands, plus the pancreas.

“If your hormone levels are too high or too low, you may have an endocrine disease or disorder,” the NIH explained. “Endocrine diseases and disorders also occur if your body does not respond to hormones the way it is supposed to.”

For Dr. Shwetha M. Anand, this means she treats thyroid conditions, pituitary diseases and women’s health issues, such as menstrual problems, menopausal disorders and osteoporosis. But much of her work involves patients with diabetes, “a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin, or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces,” according to the International Diabetes Federation.

Today, 37.3 million people in the United States — 11.3% of the population — have diabetes, explained the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of that group, the CDC noted, 8.5 million people have not yet been diagnosed with the condition, and millions more are on track to developing diabetes. In the United States, 96 million people 18 or older have prediabetes, which the CDC said accounts for 38% of the country’s adult population.

The Dublin, California Endocrinology Office

Epic Care also offers extensive oncology and hematology care across the East Bay Area. Some of Dr. Shwetha M. Anand’s work at the Dublin, California, practice overlaps with that area.

“In the field of endocrinology, we treat certain cancers, such as thyroid cancer and adrenal cancer,” she said. “We deal with all these various hormonal issues that come up with the chemotherapy and osteoporosis treatment.”

Epic Care now brings those endocrine services to its Dublin, California, office in response to what Dr. Shwetha M. Anand described as increasing demand in the Tri-Valley area. She started serving that community about two months ago and has enjoyed being in a new office and seeing “a different mix of the population.”

No matter which Epic Care office they visit, though, patients can be sure they’ll encounter the “Culture of Care (Compassion, Assurance, Responsiveness and Excellence in Service).”

“In Epic Care, I’ve seen that our staff and the management services are always trying their best to help meet patients’ needs and make them feel comfortable in our practice,” Dr. Shwetha M. Anand said.

Dr. Shwetha M. Anand and the rest of the Epic Care team have embraced this initiative, through which patients can be sure that they will always trust that:

  • They will be treated with compassion and understanding.
  • Their care providers are knowledgeable and will keep them informed about their treatment.
  • They will be treated promptly.
  • They will always receive the best possible care.

“There have been a lot of developments in the field of endocrinology over the last six to eight years,” she said. To help support that Culture of CARE, she and her peers stay up to date on the latest medical developments so they can treat their patients in the best, most current ways possible.

“There are many research studies that have come up, especially in the field of diabetes,” Dr. Shwetha M. Anand said. “Something is coming up almost every day for us to learn, and we have many options to treat these patients in the last couple of years. There have been many advancements, and that is satisfying because that gives us more options that we can use to treat patients.”

She enjoys the flexibility Epic Care provides her, giving her a place to thrive professionally as well as time to spend recharging at home with her kids, cooking or heading to the mountains to hike and explore. She applauds Epic Care “for placing their trust in me and providing all the necessary assistance required for the practice to grow and flourish.”

To her, all of their efforts benefit the patients in the end.

“The practice is very open to suggestions,” Dr. Shwetha M. Anand said. “So I feel that patients will have a better experience with Epic Care’s medical care.”
