Epic Care Offers Low-Dose Radiation Therapy as an Effective Treatment for Osteoarthritis and Other Benign Conditions

  • March 17, 2025

Epic Care, a leading independent multi-specialty practice, is proud to offer Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LD-RT) as an effective treatment for osteoarthritis and other chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

Osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans, causing pain and mobility issues. Traditional treatments include medications, injections, and surgery. However, LD-RT provides an alternative solution with proven effectiveness.

“While radiation therapy is commonly associated with cancer treatment, in lower doses, it serves as a powerful anti-inflammatory tool,” said Dr. Nicola Ally, radiation oncologist at Epic Care “We have seen remarkable success in alleviating pain for patients with osteoarthritis in the hands, knees, hips, and other joints.”

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy Provides Significant, Lasting Pain Relief with No Acute Side Effects

“Studies show LD-RT brings significant pain relief to osteoarthritis patients without side effects,” said Dr. Nicola Ally Radiation Oncologist at Epic Care. “This treatment can make a huge difference for patients struggling to find a long-term, effective solution for pain management.”

LD-RT is the most commonly used pain management treatment for osteoarthritis in Europe and is now seeing increasing usage in the United States and around the world as research continues to show significant pain relief. Multiple studies have shown a pain improvement rate of over 70 percent after the initial set of treatments. The majority of patients also reported lasting pain relief two years after beginning LD-RT.

Due to the low dosage of radiation, treatment for osteoarthritis has no reported acute side effects. A long-term review of over 1000 patients found that one patient reported some mild skin redness. No other acute or late effects were reported.

It is even suitable for patients who have previously undergone radiation for other conditions. Please note that these treatments may not eliminate the need for joint surgery, injections, or physical therapy for some conditions.

Who Can Receive Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Osteoarthritis?

LD-RT may be suitable for older osteoarthritis patients who have previously tried other forms of pain management. This treatment can be used to provide pain relief in the hands, fingers, knees, hips, ankles, shoulders, and spine. LD-RT may be considered as a treatment option after a patient has tried non-pharmacologic approaches and topical pain relievers, but before surgery has been considered.

This treatment is also recognized and approved by the vast majority of insurance plans. For those whose insurance does not cover the treatment, Epic Care can quote a private pay option.

How is Low-Dose Radiation Therapy Given?

LD-RT is administered by a radiation machine in six to eight treatment sessions given either every other day or twice a week over the course of two to three weeks. Each treatment takes less than 10 minutes, and multiple joints can be treated in the same session.

This treatment is painless and noninvasive. While receiving treatments, patients are able to continue with their daily activities.
